TCC Coach Ryan LaPierre's Media Day Interview

by TCCNN Contributor Ryan LaPierre
Updated on 12/20/17 at 8:43 PM

TCC Coach Media Day – 12/19/2017

TCCNN: Tell us how you are feeling after the first four games of the season?
Coach: The team has developed nicely. We have improved in several areas.  We as the coaching staff have to be aware of who is playing and ensure that the correct five guys are on the court at all times. The team has, and will continue to gel, as we continue to play games. As you can see from the scoreboard, our winning margin continues to grow.

TCCNN: Do you have a weak link on the team?
Coach: Next question

TCCNN: Coach, after four games your team is shooting 18.3% higher than last year. Can you explain?
Coach: Our team definitely put some time in the off season, but I think it is unanimous that the new league basketballs are attributing to our shooting success.

TCCNN: But you, personally, are shooting an abysmal 19% from the 3-point line compared to last year’s 38%.
Coach: It’s the new league basketballs. Next question….

TCCNN: The team is shooting 15% lower from the Free Throw line, what are your thoughts on that?
Coach: Disgusting. There really is only one player that is bringing our percentage down. I won’t mention any names, but he is shooting 14%. He is supposed to be our newly acquired professional from overseas, but now we wonder where he actually came from. We have mandatory free throw practice on the schedule.

TCCNN: Coach, we notice you don’t go with the same starting five each game.  What is your reasoning behind that decision?
Coach: If your late you don’t start.

TCCNN: And, your thoughts on the “half” game Monday night?
Coach: According to Rule 27(a), we should have gotten the forfeit at the start of the game. What ensued was horrendous.

TCCNN: What are your thoughts on the continued growth of the program?
Coach: DEFINITE improvement from last year. We now have commentary/breakdown of our games. The team also feels a real push for Fan Appreciation night. We are lucky to have the management that we have.

TCCNN: Describe home court advantage.
Coach: Our 8 fans really pull us through. We could not do it without them!

TCCNN: How have the refs been?
Coach: I can’t speak to that, or I will be fined. Next question…

TCCNN: Coach, last question, how are you going to prepare for the next game, with Christmas break now upon us?

Coach: We are going to do what we always do, just show up and play!

TCC Wins Bizarre Game Over Earle Street

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated at 10:50 PM on 12/18/17

It was an unusual night for the TCC Fightin' Reformers.  They had no trouble with Earle Street Baptist as they took home an easy 44-19 win, but that was the only thing that was normal about the night.  Earle Street's team bus was caught in traffic and the entire team was stranded and could not get to the arena on time.  The referees made the puzzling decision to start the clock, but not the game.  By the time Earle Street fielded their entire team of five, the first half was over.  The decision was made to only play one 18 minute half.  This infuriated TCC because it seemed as though it was a punishment to them for showing up on time.  The Reformers made it their mission to make sure Earle Street didn't take advantage of the decision that was clearly slanted in their direction by applying immediate pressure on them and did not let up till the final buzzer.  One of the newest Reformer's Ben Davis had one of the best over all games in TCC history with an impressive ten points, five rebounds, five assists, and four steals.  "Imagine if we had been allowed to play two halves tonight!  He would have flirted with a triple double for sure" said Hugh Carson.  Carson, along with Davis, led the team in scoring with ten.  The balanced scoring continued with Ryan LaPierre adding nine points and Randy Pifer chipping in eight.

Patrick Gomer suffered a scary fall early in the game when he landed on his tail bone after attempting an acrobatic shot.  He had to be helped to the bench area but made a stunning return a few minutes later to give his team that much needed emotional boost.  "He is a warrior and we knew he was hurting, but him coming back out showed how much we, as a team, feel about this season” quipped Rome Lawson.  "We are playing at a much higher level this year" said Jonathan Chasteen.  "We have come together much quicker than we ever imagined" said Daniel Brown.

The red-hot shooting continued for the fourth consecutive game for Pifer as he connected on two of his three attempts from deep.  He is now shooting an unbelievable 70% from deep this season.  "It is mostly due to the new balls we are using this season" he explained.  "I really feel like I have a lot of control on my shot" he added.  "I hate those balls" said an angry LaPierre.  It should be noted he is shooting 38% from the field and a disgusting 19% from deep this season and is looking for any excuse in the book to explain his shooting woes.

TCC enters the Christmas break at 3-1 on the season.  With six games left on the schedule, the TCC Media Relations Officer Karla Simpson announced #makeninemine.  This new initiative will be the rallying cry for TCC as they try to achieve the 9-1 season record.  Fan Appreciation Night has been announced for January 29, 2018 at 8:30 PM at Taylors First Baptist Church.  Make plans now to attend what will surly be talked about for minutes after the game in the parking lot and then forgotten for all eternity.

Team Retreat

by TCCNN Reporter Jordan Cobb
Updated on 12/12/17 at 12:37 PM

In what can only be described as a complete 180 from last week, the TCC Fightin’ Reformers are on top of the world, they are ebullient. Riding a two-game win streak and fresh off a complete destruction of REZ Faith, the team scheduled a last-minute and poorly planned getaway to the North Carolina mountains. The team was seen leaving FBC Taylors in a chartered van that was engulfed in a throng of fans that numbered in the tens. Randy Pifer was kind enough to put a TCCNN reporter through on speaker phone for an interview with the team.

When asked for a post-game debrief, one player remarked, “We feel good right now. Ben Davis’ mom said we could use her step-cousin’s home in the mountains for the evening, so we’re looking forward to a quick getaway together.” Another player shared his delusions dreams, “We feel now that we have all-time greatness potential. There are quiet whispers among the twelve or so people that show up to our games that we can be one of the greatest church league teams to ever grace the gyms of the Upstate.” When pressed with the fact that the team already has a loss on the season, one player added, “We are filing an official appeal to the league office to have that loss wiped from our record. The other team had a giant playing for it, and that seemed unfair to us. This is basketball, not Lord of the Rings.” Sources confirmed, however, that the player in question is no taller than 6’7” in height, a height that is reportedly very common for people who play basketball.

During the van ride, the team unanimously voted to give coach LaPierre a raise. He will no longer have to pay for his post-game meals at Waffle House. “Considering where we’re at right now as far as the quality of our team, and the talk of greatness among our fans, we feel that it is well within reason to splurge a little on dinner,” said Patrick Gomer, when asked about the team’s plans for the evening. “We usually go to Waffle House, but we’re going to eat at Golden Corral tonight,” he added. “I’ll pay for the entire team’s meal. I’ll put it on my credit card,” said Jordan Cobb. Sources confirmed that Cobb later asked that Dave Ramsey not be told about the credit card.

TCC Wins in Blowout Fashion Over REZ

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated at 12:43 AM on 12/12/17

The Fightin' Reformers put on a show for the crowd and posted their best win in franchise history with a 60-26 win over REZ.  TCC was paced by the ultra-hot shooting Randy Pifer in the first half as they cruised to a 35-10 lead.  Pifer hit his first three three point attempts and finished the night shooting 4-6 from the field.  His shooting percentage now stands at 75% for the season.  Ryan LaPierre lead the team in scoring with a bounce back performance.  He had been struggling with his shot through the first month, but finished the game hitting 5 of his 8 attempts and finished with 12 points.  The whole team chipped in and for the first time all season, everyone on the team scored.  Daniel Brown played the finest game of his career with a virtuoso performance.  He finished with nine points, three assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Patrick Gomer didn't look to score in this game, but led the team in rebounding by pulling down seven boards.  He also added four assists.  "We played about as well as we have ever played tonight" Jonathan Chasteen said.  "But we still made some mistakes out there, and we can play better" he added.  Rome Lawson played his usual steady inside game with eight points and four rebounds.  Hugh Carson was aggressive and attacking the basket all night, but struggled with his shot.  "Hugh did not get kind treatment from the referees tonight, and I think that got into his head a little bit" said Jordan Cobb.  Cobb played a dazzling game with three highlight worthy finishes.  He added a team high three steals as well.

TCC has had a good, not great, start to the season.  "Blowing the lead we had against Taylors in the first game has stuck with us" said Pifer.  "We are using that as motivation to get better each and every week" said LaPierre.  "I think tonight showed what we can do as a team if we continue to pass the ball and get good looks at the rim" said Ben Davis.  "Davis has been a revelation at the point guard spot.  His passing and vision are what had been lacking from this team the last few years.  As this team continues to play together and get to know each other, I expect them to continue to improve and become the best team in the Wade Hampton Church Basketball League" said color commentator Spencer Champlin.  Play by play announcer, Paula Karmin, added "I think he should wear the orange shorts every week".

TCC returns to the court next Monday night at 7:30 against Earle Street Baptist at Lee Road Baptist gym.

TCC Updated Season Stats Through Two Games

Players Only Meeting

by TCCNN Reporter Jordan Cobb
Updated on 12/6/17 at 3:30 PM

In a shocking and somewhat confusing announcement this morning, team spokesperson Amber Mathis announced that the Fightin’ Reformers held a players only meeting on Monday night immediately following their win over Fairview. The confusion surrounds the timing of the meeting. The Reformers are only two games into their grueling 10-game season, with a record of 1-1. This would appear to be a decent start to the season, but sources say the team is irate. Due to the sensitive nature of the meeting, all players asked to remain anonymous in their quotes.

“Honestly, I’m a little upset it took this long to hold a players only meeting. I mean, after our effort during that first game I was ready to retire,” said one player who declined to give his age. When asked about the atmosphere of the meeting, one player reported, “It was very intense. One guy lost an arm, and another lost his religion. It was ugly. I haven’t seen anger like that since my Aunt Belinda had her casserole dish stolen a number of years ago.” Another player mentioned, “One guy took a potshot at coach and called him ‘LaPetite,’ which caused coach to throw one of Randy Pifer’s shoes at the guy, and that actually injured him, so we’ll be without him next game. It doesn’t matter, though, really, because his shooting percentage is terrible.” It was not immediately clear if the injury was due to contact with the shoe or simply from the smell of it.

Another player reported that an issue that came up repeatedly in the meeting was whether or not the team should implement a strict steroid regime for the team. The team was reportedly split about the issue. After obtaining a scratch piece of paper from the room where the meeting was held, we can definitively report that Mathis and Carson were not in favor of the use of steroids. Their decision was, presumably, influenced by their pastoral obligations.

At press time, sources confirmed that multiple players would boycott the remainder of the season if the team didn’t quickly turn around their lukewarm 1-1 start to the season. One player said, “We’re used to being all-stars around here. We have fans. We have our own jerseys. This lose-a-game, win-a-game nonsense has to go. Do you think the 90's Bulls or 80's Lakers would have put up with this? No. And we won’t either.” TCC's public media liaison Karla Simpson declined to further comment on the chaos surrounding TCC's Athletic Department.

TCC Gets Win Over Rival Fairview

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated on 12/5/17 at 10:29 PM

The Fightin' Reformers won their first game of the year with a 45-38 victory over Fairview.  TCC used a balanced attack to wear down Fairview.  Hugh Carson and Patrick Gomer paced the team with nine points each.  Ryan LaPierre chipped in eight, but struggled shooting the ball, as he was only able to convert two of his team high fourteen attempts.  "Getting the win was our only goal tonight.  We weren't interested in any beauty contests" said Daniel Brown.  Brown played his usual pesky defense and constantly stymied Fairview's backcourt.

Fairview was led by Perrin Stewart who single handedly kept his team in the game with a dazzling array of offensive moves.  Stephen Donovan struggled to find his shot.  He attempted to attack TCC in the lane, but was denied by the cruel front rim, time after time.  "We wanted to keep their shooters off the three point line.  Stewart was able to hit some tough shots, but Donovan and David Sandquist were held in check" said Jonathan Chasteen.

Rome Lawson was big on the inside again.  His presence alone kept Fairview from coming inside.  When they did try to venture into "The Rome Zone" he denied them with his team high two blocks.  "He's the main key to our success" said LaPierre, "his size and skill-set are a rare combination and everything we want to do involves him being on the court".  Lawson's front court mate, Randy Pifer, continued his scorching start converting both of his three point attempts.  Pifer is leading the team in shooting percentage by shooting an other-worldly 83.33% from the floor.  "His shot is so pure right now.  We need to look for him more often" said point guard Ben Davis.

TCC Returns to the court at 9:30 pm next Monday night at Taylor's First Baptist against REZ.

TCC Loses Heartbreaker in Season Opener

By TCCNN reporter Randy Pifer
Updated at 12:25 AM on 11/28

The Fightin’ Reformers opened the 2017-18 season against Taylor’s First Baptist Church and jumped out to an early lead thanks to strong play from new comers Jordan Cobb and Ben Davis.  Cobb put on a show with his superb court vision finding open teammates for easy buckets time and time again. Davis, doing his best Jason Williams impression, put on a dazzling display before injuring his leg midway through the second half and was forced to the bench.  Rome Lawson and Randy Pifer paced the early scoring and led TCC to a seven point lead at the half.

The second half started just like the first half with TCC stretching their lead to as many as twelve with just over six minutes left in the game. Then disaster struck.  Whether it can be attributed to lack of stamina or not having practiced together ever, The Reformers imploded and blew their near insurmountable lead to drop a 43-45 decision.  TCC’s undoing was at the free throw line as they converted a dismal 1-11.

Patrick Gomer, making his Reformer debut, looked rusty at times but showed that incredible talent in flashes  that made management so excited when they signed him during the off season. Coach Ryan LaPierre, offering his thoughts after the game, said “we jumped out early, but couldn’t close the door. But make no mistake, that’s a great team we played out there tonight!” Team Captain Hugh Carson struggled getting a shot up, and was not getting any calls as every time he tried to drive the ball he was getting hit but no whistle.

Sam Ali summed up the teams feelings after the game by saying “we knew coming in we would have to put pressure on their shooters and hit the glass hard. We weren’t able to do that for sustained periods of time and it caught up to us”.  Defensive stalwart Daniel Brown played his usual superb defense and hassled their ball handlers and led the team with four steals.

TCC will regroup and look to get back on track next week agaisnt rival Fairview Baptist. Jonathan Chasteen implored all TCC fans to make it out to support the team and cheer them to victory.

2017-18 Schedule Released

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated at 11:13 AM on 11/20/17

The 2017-18 Fightin' Reformers Schedule was released Monday morning.  The schedule makers did not do any favors for TCC as they will have to play in three Midnight madness matches (that start at 9:30).   They also will have to play an unprecedented five straight road games to end the season. "They obviously know we are the team to beat and want to make us earn it this year" said Coach Ryan LaPierre.  Other highlights of the schedule are two games against crosstown Rival Fairview Baptist and the first games in franchise history to be played at Berea First Baptist's gym.

Fan Appreciation Night will be announced soon.  The scheduling department must try and figure out how to deal with the challenges of having all 8:30 games at the end of the season.  Committee chairwoman, Amber Mathis, could not be immediately reached.

2017-18 TCC Fightin' Reformers Basketball Team

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
updated on 11/11/17 at 4:05 PM

Returning stars Ryan LaPierre and Hugh Carson lead a retooled roster on a quest for an undefeated season.  The TCC Fightin' Reformers are about to embark on their third season and look to have their deepest and most talented team yet.  The additions of Jordan Cobb, Ben Davis and Patrick Gomer along with the entire 2016-17 team that went 6-3 should make for a tough challenge for any team to prepare.  TCC veteran Donny Mathis also looks to make his return after missing the entire 2016-17 season with an undisclosed injury that he suffered on Fan Appreciation Night during the 2015-16 season finale.  Head Coach LaPierre has a tough challenge of trying to find playing time for eleven players, but he seems to be up for the challenge.  "We are playing in the 30 and over league for a reason.  These guys get tired quickly" he said during the preseason coaches meetings.  "We will make it work" he said emphatically.

The team will be without Pifer for a few weeks as he pursues a volleyball championship in the Pavilion indoor volleyball league.  "Volleyball is my new love.  Basketball takes a back seat at this juncture of my life" he quipped.  Other reporters were quick to point out that Pifer was, without question, going to lose his starting spot to newcomer Gomer, and this was just his way of deflecting that painful fact.  Pifer categorically denied that was the case.

The front court appears to be the strength of the team with Gomer, Carson and Rome Lawson looking to dominate with superior size and skill.  "There is not another team in this league that can compete with us down low" said guard Daniel Brown.  TCC will look to play a much faster tempo this year.  "With this many bodies, it doesn't make sense to not run as hard as we can each trip down the court.  If we get tired there is a fresh body on the bench who can come in" said assistant coach Sam Ali.

The backcourt, led by leading scorer LaPierre and defensive dynamo Brown, will have more open shots this year as opposing defenses will have to focus on stopping the Triplet Towers down low.  "We will play inside-out and look for open shots on the perimeter" said Mathis, who has never met a shot he didn't like.

The TCCNN will announce the schedule when it is released as well as when the much anticipated Fan Appreciation Night will be held.  "Fan Appreciation Night promises to be a real spectacle every year, but this year we have some real fun things planned" said team captain Carson.  "I hope everyone will plan on coming out for as many games as possible this year" he exclaimed.

TCC Season in Review

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated 10:02 pm on 2/4/17

The 2016-17 Season has come to a close.  The Fightin' Reformers had a successful campaign and finished the season 6-3 including an impressive OT win over Edwards Road and a blowout victory on Fan Appreciation Night against LCOS.  GM Randy Pifer meet with the team after the final game and announced the season award winners.  The awards included MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year.  The winners names will be inducted into the TCC hall of fame, joining last years winner.  Last years MVP (Hugh Carson), Defensive Player of the Year (Daniel Brown) and Rookie of the Year (Sam Ali) presented the awards to this years winners in a ceremony worthy of all the pomp and circumstance.

This year's winners were:

MVP:  Ryan LaPierre

Not only did LaPierre lead the team in scoring, but he also took over halfway through the season as coach and led the team to their first winning season in history.  LaPierre was the most consistent shooter on the team and led in three point percentage.  He finished the year averaging 19.2 points and 4.2 boards per game.

Defensive Play of the Year: Daniel Brown

Brown takes home the DPOY trophy for the second year in a row.  His quick hands and lightning reflexes led to many forced turnovers and easy points for TCC.  He only averaged 1.1 steals per game, but his constant on the ball pressure on his assignment did not get many open looks.  He was consistently placed on the opposing teams best offensive player and he more than held his own week to week.

Rookie of the Year:  Rome Lawson

Lawson was a force on the boards, leading the team with 9.9 boards per game.  He was second on the team in blocks and led the team in FG percentage.  He was the youngest player on the team, but one of the most vocal leaders on the team.  TCC can only hope he will continue to grow into his role as a team leader.

STATS AND FACTS:
Fan Appreciation Night Attendance: 18
Total Season Attendance: 49
Overall Lifetime Record: 11-8
Lifetime Record against rival Fairview: 2-1
Number of minutes Donny Mathis played this year: 0

TCC Avenges Early Season Loss, Wins on Fan Appreciation Night

By TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated at 12:15 am on 1/31/17

The fans came out in droves to see their Fightin' Reformers one last team this season and they did not leave disappointed as TCC used a balanced attack and unselfish play to dominate LCOS and walk away with a convincing 48-30 win.  Super fan Kim Chasteen, who rarely misses a game, said this was the best she had seen The Reformers play all season.  "It wasn't just one player tonight" she exclaimed!  Typically Ryan LaPierre and Hugh Carson have to do the majority of the scoring if TCC is going to win, but tonight it was all about the team.

Daniel Brown and Randy Pifer both posted season high totals of 14 and 9 points respectively.  Pifer also had 9 rebounds.  Rome Lawson turned in another stellar night on the boards by corralling 11 more and ends the season 1 rebound shy of averaging 10 boards per game.  When speaking about their efforts on the glass, Hollie Carson said "they were like animals out there going after every lose ball!  They were not gonna be denied tonight!"  Ben Elting has attended every fan appreciation night going all the way back to the CGBC days, and he remarked this was the best performance he had seen.  Wife of star LaPierre, Hannah, attended her first game.  She was awe struck at the support the team received.  "They have the best fans in the whole over 30 church league division!"

The game was tight through the first half, and ended with the score tied 23-23.  TCC, however, turned on the jets coming out of the 2nd half.  A quick 5 point run by Pifer consisting of a hook shot in the lane and a deep, beautiful arching three put them ahead for good.  LCOS called a timeout and you could just see the life had been sucked out of them.  "I have that killer instinct" Pifer said.

Coach LaPierre ends the season with a 6-3 record, the best mark in TCC history.  "We knew we had the talent to compete at a high level this season.  We are kinda disappointed we let three get away from us.  Next year we will improve and go for that undefeated season" he said at the post game press conference.  New fan, Caitlan Reid, who just happened to catch the second half said the Reformers have a new fan for life.  "They play with such enthusiasm for the game!  It is infectious!  I will be getting season tickets next year!"

The team presented an award to videographer Paula Karmin for all her efforts this season.  Along with the award she was given a gift card from a collection taken up from the team.  Sam Ali said of her after the game "she was just as valuable to this team as any of the players.  How else would we have fed our egos by watching out videos and looking at our stats?"  The TCCNN also thanks Karmin for her work,  "without the videos there would be no blog or stats.  Thanks Paula!"

Thanks for a great season!  Looking forward to next year already!

TCC Flushes Fairview In Big Rivalry Win

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated at 10:41 pm on 1/23/17

The Fightin' Reformers put together their most impressive 32 minutes of the season Monday night as they put away Fairview early in the second half.  TCC kept their foot on Fairview's throat and coasted to an easier-than-expected 47-28 win.  After the win, leading scorer and former Fairview star, Ryan LaPierre said "we still had way too many turnovers, but we were able to put some serious defensive pressure on them, and contest every shot. That allowed us to get out and run in transition."  Jerome Lawson was a man possessed on the boards once again, constantly fighting 2 and 3 opposing players for the ball and coming down with each and every one.  He finished with a season high 12 rebounds.

Jonathan Chasteen had his finest game of the season with a season high 4 assists and 3 rebounds to go along with 1 steal.  His assist total would have been higher had some of his teammates helped him out by not missing easy layups.  "We had a setback last week and I wanted to come out and help set the tone that this team won't play like that again" a determined Chasteen said.  Daniel Brown seemed to have bought into that message as well.  Brown, starting for the first time in weeks, was in attack mode from the beginning and we looking to drive and get fouled early and often.  His poor free throw shooting was not a deterrent at all.

Sam Ali is starting to get a reputation as on opportunist.  He seems to always find himself in the right spot for loose balls and he was able to do it again tonight, converting 2 easy layups by just being in the right place at the right time.  "I pride myself on being a smart player.  I always try to make the right play and be in the right spot.  Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't" he quipped.  Team captain Hugh Carson had a nice bounce back game after last weeks dismal performance.  He finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds.  "We really focused this week on getting back to the fundamentals and playing defense and I think it showed on the scoreboard" he told the TCCNN after the game.

TCC has now beat Fairview two consecutive times, and has many questioning if this is even a rivalry at this point.

TCC's Fan Appreciation Night is next Monday Night at Taylors First Baptist Church at 7:30.  There will be a team meal and autograph session at Fuddruckers on Wade Hampton prior to the game at 6:00 PM.  Everyone is welcome to attend and get a chance to rub elbows with your favorite Reformer.  TCC is asking that you please RSVP to Randy Pifer or Amber Mathis by Sunday Morning if you plan to attend the dinner portion of the night.

TCC Loses Ugly, Poorly Officiated Game to Earle Street

by TCCNN Reporter Randy Pifer
Updated on 1/17/2017 at 12:08 AM

The majority of The Fightin' Reformers could not buy a basket for much of the night despite another strong showing from Ryan LaPierre, who led the team with 26 points.  The rest of the team struggled to only combine for 9 points and TCC lost its third game of the year to drop to 4-3.  The score was close through much of the game, but horrible officiating and bad shots doomed TCC.  Earlier in the year TCC dismantled Earle Street, but the extra week off seemed to have affected the Reformers as their rust was evident.  "That was about as bad as we could play" said Hugh Carson as he glanced over the box score.  "14% shooting!  Not gonna win many games shooting like that" he said disgustedly.

TCC seemed to have looked past Earle Street with the huge win over Edwards Road last time out and their big rivalry game up next week.  "I would never use that excuse" said Randy Pifer who was abysmal yet again shooting 3 air balls before checking himself out midway through the second half.  When pressed after the game why he went to the bench he simply replied "that was where I belonged".

Daniel Brown had one of the highlight plays of the year when he turned the ball over, but made up for it with a chase down block from behind.  The Earle Street player was 10 feet in front of him when the turnover occurred, but Brown's impressive closing speed and superior athleticism won the day, just unfortunately not the game.  Brown's block and Jerome Lawson's block against Northgate are both in the running for the TCC Play of the Year.

Next game up for TCC is their chief rival, Fairview Baptist.  Fairview, led by John Miller and Stephen Donovan, hope to keep TCC reeling when they face off at St. Giles next Monday night.  Fan Appreciation Night was scheduled for next Monday night, but a logistical issue has forced the festivities to be postponed to the following Monday night at Taylor's First Baptist when TCC takes of LCOS.  Make plans now to attend Fan Appreciation Night at Taylor First Baptist.  You will not want to miss out on this years surprise collectible item!  "If you though the collectible cards from last year were great, wait till you see what we have in store for you this year" said GM Pifer.

TCC Wins Overtime Thriller

by TCCNN Lead Reporter Randy Pifer
updated at 11:23 pm on 1/2/17

In a game for the ages, TCC squeaked out an impressive overtime win against the formidable Edwards Road Baptist squad 53-47.  The Reformers were led by star forward Ryan LaPierre 24 points and Hugh Carson's 12.  Rome Lawson came up big with 13 rebounds and defensively dominating their big man, number 5, frustrating him time and time again with blocked shots and tipped passes.  In one play early on, Lawson blocked him so well it caused the big fella to tumble to the ground and the referee called a held ball.  "He got into his head early and he spent the rest of the game trying to go at Rome with no success" said Randy Pifer

TCC almost won the game in regulation when Carson hit two free throws with 3 seconds left to give the Reformers a 2 point lead.  But a horrible defensive lapse by Pifer allowed a wide open layup at the buzzer to force overtime.  It was all TCC in the extra session as they ran away from Edwards Road with timely shooting and all out hustle to push their record to 4-2.  With 4 games remaining on the schedule TCC is 2 wins away from clinching the best record in TCC history.

TCC has been on fire the last few games and it can be traced back to a players only meeting in which Lawson lit into some of his teammates.  The team seems to have responded with improved play on both ends of the court.  "He is definitely an emotional leader on this team" said Jonathan Chasteen.  "When he speaks, we listen" said Sam Ali.  "Mostly cause he is huge and scary" added Daniel Brown.

Brown, a Clemson fan, looked a little sluggish having just arrived earlier in the day from his trip out to Arizona. When asked what was more important than the team that he had to travel out west he simply replied "just wanted to take in some sights".  Coach LaPierre benched him at the start of the game to remind him of where his priorities should lie.  Ali, also a Clemson fan, was benched to start the game as well for conduct detrimental to the team.  "He broke some team rules and had to sit out.  We talked about it before the game and he understood why and accepted his punishment" said GM Pifer, a noted Buckeye fan.
